Any help as to whether we can refund a plane ticket etc?

My fiance and i are flying from California to Indiana for Christmas to see family we have not seen in a long time. Our friends are coming out for school and are thinking that if they come out when were due to fly back that we should road trip it. Problem is we need to buy tickets soon but is there a way to refund the tickets back if we decide to drive with our friends. Should we buy one way tickets and then possibly be stuck if they cant come back with us at that time? Any help?

Generally speaking the answer is no. Most airlines do not provide a refund, especially if you have already begun the trip. There may be a few exceptions, ie Southwest will give you credit. Best bet is to read the fine print and if in doubt check with the airline before you buy. also be sure to purchase directly from the airline rather than through an internet site such as expedia or travelocity. there is more wiggle room when you ar dealing directly with the airline.

some tickets are refundable and others are not. Usually the non refundable tickets are more expensive, my best advise is to check the terms and conditions of the airline or website you bought the ticket with.

Call the airline and ask……..if you purchase one way your gonna get hammered.$$$$$$…..refundable tickets cannot be split……….the airline knows it can make more $$$$$$$$$ off of a one way fair…….

Most likely you are going to find the cheapest R/T flights out there. Those tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable.

You CAN purchase a full fare, open ended ticket which should be refundable. But we are talking thousands of dollars to the cheaper hundreds.

Unless you buy expensive tickets, you will almost certainly not be able to cash in the return portion. And one-way tickets often cost as much as round trip. So why not look for the cheapest round trip tickets you can find, and then just not worry about it?

Lauren, I suggest that you look at the entire picture. Driving from IN to CA in winter will be no picnic. It is a long way, and the weather could be horrible. How many friends and you two in a car? Who will drive, and where will you stay? It will be at least a 3 day (and a HARD 3 days) drive, making 800 miles a day. That is 12 hours a day driving in good weather. Then, too,

If you were my daughter I would tell you to fly back and not worry about what your friends are doing. Make your own plans according to your schedule.

    Regards,
    Dan

PS You can buy refundable airline tickets, but they are at a higher cost than non-refundable ones. Check with expedia.com and see what you can come up with. Have a Merry Christmas.
